A Brief History of Locksmithing
Locksmithing is one of the oldest trades. Evidence of locks and keys dates back thousands of years: the Egyptians used wooden pin locks, and the Romans developed metal locks and keys that resemble what we still use today.
From craft guilds to modern trade
In medieval Europe, locksmiths belonged to guilds and were responsible for securing homes, chests, and city gates. As technology advanced, so did lock mechanisms — lever locks, warded locks, and eventually the pin-tumbler lock patented by Linus Yale in the 19th century, which became the basis for most residential and commercial locks.
Today’s locksmith: more than keys
Modern locksmiths work with electronic access control, smart locks, and high-security systems. The core skills — understanding how locks work, key cutting, and non-destructive entry — remain essential. For masters in the LockUnlocked network, knowing the history of the trade helps explain to customers why quality work and transparent pricing still matter.
